After a poor start, including elimination from the Coppa Italia and the Fairs' Cup, president Ivanoe Fraizzoli fired coach Heriberto Herrera following a 0–3 loss to city rivals Milan. Youth team boss Giovanni Invernizzi took over on a temporary basis. He rejuvenated the squad, turning Tarcisio Burgnich into a sweeper, playing Mauro Bellugi at right-back, reintegrating Jair, replacing Mario Frustalupi with Mario Bertini, and asking veterans Facchetti, Mazzola, Corso, and Boninsegna to perform. The turning point came after a defeat to Napoli in week 7; on the flight home, Invernizzi and experienced players plotted their path to the title, creating the famous 'tabella'. Following that defeat, Inter went on an unbeaten run, taking 21 points from a possible 24. They won the return derby, overcame a significant point gap to winter champions Milan, and secured the championship with two games to spare. This remains the only time a Serie A team changed coach mid-season and won the title.
