Nepal
Marion Ravenwood's bar in Nepal, where Indy comes for the headpiece of the staff of Ra in 1936.
Nepal is a setting of Raiders of the Lost Ark. In 1936 Jones travels there to Marion Ravenwood's bar to find the headpiece of the staff of Ra that her father, Abner Ravenwood, had owned, and learns that Abner is dead.
Lore & Background
The bar is set ablaze in a shootout with the Gestapo agent Arnold Toht and his men, who have come for the medallion; Toht burns its image into his hand trying to recover it from the flames, and Jones and Marion escape with it. Pat Roach appears as one of Toht's Nepalese Sherpas. Shots of the DC-3 in which Jones and Marion fly out of Nepal were reused from the film Lost Horizon (1973).
Reader's Guide
Marion's Nepalese bar was one of the scenes Spielberg wanted lit with pitch-black shadows on the wall; he settled for subtler shading so the actors' eyes would not be hidden. An establishing shot of her bar was a matte painting.
