The mythical city in Peru where the crystal skull must be returned to its thirteen interdimensional owners.

Akator is the mythical city that drives Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. Harold "Ox" Oxley found a crystal skull in Peru while searching for it, and the skull commands those it touches to return it there. Mac, greedy for a "city of gold", is frustrated when Akator turns out to be something else.

Lore & Background

In Akator, Jones and his companions learn that the skull belonged to one of thirteen "interdimensional beings" whom the early Ugha tribes worshipped as deities. Spalko returns the skull to its skeleton, which offers her omniscience; as an interdimensional portal opens above the chamber, taking Mac and Spalko's remaining soldiers, the skeletons combine into a reanimated alien that vaporizes Spalko with knowledge. Jones, Ox, Marion and Mutt escape the crumbling city as a flying saucer rises from the ruins and departs for another dimension. Once the skull is back in Akator, Ox regains his sanity.

Reader's Guide

Akator brings science fiction into the series: Lucas persuaded Spielberg to use aliens by calling them not "extraterrestrials" but "interdimensional" beings. The real British explorer Percy Fawcett, last seen in 1925 looking for the Lost City of Z in the Amazon Basin, is named among the inspirations for Indiana Jones.
