Lore & Background
Jones and Marion reach Cairo from Nepal with the medallion, the headpiece of the staff of Ra, which Toht failed to take from Marion's bar. There Jones's friend Sallah, an Egyptian excavator, tells them that Belloq is assisting the Nazis, who are excavating at Tanis and have made an incomplete replica of the medallion from the image burned into Toht's hand. Nazi soldiers and mercenaries attack Jones, and Marion is seemingly killed. An imam deciphers the medallion: one side warns against disturbing the Ark, and the other, which the Nazis do not have, corrects the measurements for the staff of Ra. Jones and Sallah realize the Nazis are digging in the wrong place, infiltrate the dig and use the medallion and a correctly sized staff to locate the Well of Souls.
Reader's Guide
The Cairo sequence follows the Nepal bar fight. A swordsman, played by stuntman Terry Richards, is shot by Jones: the planned long fight scene was cut short because Ford was suffering from dysentery. The Tanis dig site was filmed in the Sahara near the Tozeur oasis in Tunisia, which portrayed Egypt.
