Gameplay
Auto Assault takes place in the 23rd century after a sterilization attempt left Earth in ruins. Players choose to be a Mutant, BioMek, or Human and fight in their race's area of control against NPCs, eventually reaching Ground Zero (GZ). At GZ, two layers exist: a PvP layer for fighting players of opposing races, and a non-PvP layer controlled by the player's faction where quests are completed. The game centers on third-person vehicular combat using advanced weapons. Towns allow the player to move their customized character on foot to interact with NPCs, other players, and buy upgrades and vehicles. Outside towns, players traverse terrain in heavily armed vehicles with real-time third-person shooter combat using keyboard and mouse. Character skills activate special abilities. Unlike many MMORPGs, Auto Assault has no death penalty; players can die without consequence.
Shutdown
Due to a lack of subscribers, support for the product was terminated. The company communicated this on the public forums one month before shutting down. On July 2, 2007, it was officially announced that servers would close August 31 and accounts would be reconciled. Offers from parties to continue running servers were denied. Subscribers received “Parting Gifts” via email offering opportunities to take part in other products, including Richard Garriott’s Tabula Rasa and City of Heroes.
