Gameplay
Battlefield Play4Free pulled together elements from Battlefield 2 and Battlefield: Bad Company 2. Players could jump into either Assault or Rush modes, and the game featured a leveling system, an in-game store, and customization options reminiscent of Battlefield Heroes. Matches randomly assigned players to the Russian Ground Forces or the United States Marine Corps, with servers supporting up to 32 players. The class system offered four roles: Assault, Medic, Engineer, and Recon. Assault troops carried an assault rifle and an Ammo Box to resupply teammates. Medics wielded a light machine gun, a Medic Box for healing, and a defibrillator to revive fallen allies. Engineers packed an RPG-7, a submachine gun, and a repair tool for fixing vehicles. Recon soldiers used a sniper rifle, a motion sensor, and M18 Claymore mines. All classes could also equip a shotgun and a tracer dart gun. The game included sixteen vehicles and eight maps from Battlefield 2. Developer Easy Studios rolled out regular updates, starting with the Oman map on 29 January 2011. Sharqi Peninsula arrived on 4 April 2011, the same day the game entered open beta. Basra followed on 9 June 2011, and Dragon Valley on 10 August 2011. These updates also introduced motion blur, thanks to a modified Refractor engine.
