Gameplay
In Battlestar Galactica Online, players flew spacecraft in a browser-based MMO set in the Battlestar Galactica universe. Upon signing up, each player chose to be either a Colonial human or a Cylon cyborg pilot, and that choice was permanent for that character. However, the game allowed multiple accounts, so someone could create pilots on both sides. The game limited how many players could occupy a single sector at once, but battles could still involve hundreds of participants. New players went through a tutorial that revealed the story, then started in their faction’s home sector. The game world was split into many sectors that players could jump between, and either faction could capture and control each sector. For smaller fights, there was a separate area called battlespace designed for one-on-one or small group combat. Ships came in four main types: Interceptor, Assault, Command, and Multi-role, each divided into three classes: Strikes, Escorts, and Lines. A fourth class, Capital Ships, included Carriers, Battlestars, and Basestars. Players could target stationary objects like outposts and platforms, and they could also build mining ships that the opposing side could attack. Points earned were shown on a leaderboard and allowed players to level up, with no final ending to the game. Ships had to be purchased, and new ships became available to buy as a player gained levels. To get ships and weapons, players could either spend real money on virtual currency from Bigpoint or earn points and merits through gameplay to buy and equip their gear.
