Background

In the 26th century, two factions dominate space: the Tyi, cybernetically enhanced superhumans, and the Genides, biogenetically perfected humans. The Tyi achieve great strength and endurance through augmentation, resist radiation, and process data quickly. The Genides resist hostile environments, heal quickly, communicate telepathically, and have long life expectancy. Both factions enter the territory of the Restorers, an ancient alien race with a history of destructive behavior toward other civilizations.

Gameplay

Black Prophecy focused on player versus player and player versus environment combat. Players received missions from characters or hub terminals, and up to ten could form a team for missions with increased difficulty and better rewards. PvP offered no bonuses beyond mission rewards. The only death penalty was a stacking debuff to ship stats lasting five minutes; destroyed ships left no wrecks and resurrected instantly, with inventory items retained. Players gained levels through mission experience, allocating points to increase stats or a tactics stat for maneuvers like U-turns or speed boosts. Common items were bought from NPC dealers on stations, while advanced items were looted or crafted. Trading between players required manual meetings and a trading window, as no auction or market existed. The crafting system, similar to Korean MMORPGs, used random numbers: players obtained a blueprint and resources, docked at a station, selected the crafting menu, and placed the blueprint. The end result was shown before crafting began, which took time based on product level and allowed no other actions. Crafting could fail, losing all resources, or produce a perfect item with better stats, sellable at high prices.

Development

Development began in late 2006 with a team of 50. Originally planned for a 2009 release by parent studio 10tacle Studios, it premiered at the 2007 Games Convention in Leipzig. The first website went online on 21 August 2007. At E3 2008, a new trailer debuted and closed beta registration opened. After 10tacle's bankruptcy in August 2008, Reakktor confirmed commitment to development. A new website launched on 5 March 2009, and forums opened on 8 April 2009. Originally envisioned as a subscription-based indie game, Gamigo acquired trademark rights and published it as free-to-play. Open beta began in February 2011, and the game released in Europe on 21 March 2011. Sci-Fi author Michael Marrak developed the setting and story.
