Ging Freecss

Gon Freecss became a Hunter because he wanted to find his father, Ging. Ging is a Double Star Ruins Hunter. He left Whale Island before turning twelve to become a Hunter, and only came back ten years later to ask his grandmother to look after Gon. His cousin Mito thought he was not fit to raise a child, so she got custody, and Ging never returned.

Ging created the video game Greed Island and captured Razor to put inside it. He is a member of the Zodiacs with the code name "Boar," and he is one of just two members who do not act like their animal. At the end of the chairman election, Ging finally met Gon. He told Gon to apologize to Kite and talked about what adventure means, then they separated again.

He quit the Zodiacs and joined Beyond Netero's trip to the Dark Continent, paying to become second-in-command in name only. Ging says he avoids Gon because he is ashamed of being absent due to his own selfishness, and he challenges his son to find him. He left a Greed Island memory card and a recorded message with Mito for Gon to get once he became a Hunter. Ging apparently believed Gon would recover from his time in the hospital.

All information about Ging is kept secret, even in the official Hunter database. He taught Kite and inspired Satotz to become a Hunter. Chairman Netero once told Biscuit that Ging is one of the five best Nen users in the world.

Hanzo

Hanzo, an 18-year-old shinobi who has practiced ninjutsu his entire life, became a Hunter specifically to locate the Hermit's Scroll. During the exam's cooking portion, he was the sole participant familiar with sushi, a Japanese dish from his homeland. In the final round, he fought Gon, where the loser had to concede. Even after Hanzo broke Gon's arm, Gon refused to give up. Seeing no hatred in Gon's eyes, Hanzo realized he had grown fond of him and voluntarily forfeited, allowing Gon to pass. Hanzo then secured his own Hunter license by threatening Pokkle in his next match. According to Wing, Hanzo learned Nen after the exam. Later, during the Dark Continent arc, he joined Kurapika's group as a bodyguard for Prince Momoze. When Momoze's mother ordered him to protect Marayam instead, Hanzo was furious. After Momoze was killed, he blamed himself and swore to avenge her.

Kite

Kite is the first Hunter to appear in the story. As a student of Ging Freecss, Gon's father, he went to Whale Island three years before the main events to find clues that would help him pass his final exam: locating Ging. After rescuing Gon from a foxbear, Kite told him that his father was alive and the greatest Hunter, which motivated Gon to become one himself. Once Gon finished Greed Island, he teleported to a player named "NIGG" and found Kite again, who was leading a team of aspiring Hunters—Banana Kavaro, Lin Koshi, Monta Yuras, Podungo Lapoy, Spinner Clow, and Stick Dinner—on a biological survey for new species in Kakin.

Kite's Nen ability, Crazy Slots, uses a clown head that picks a number from 1 to 9 and calls forth a corresponding weapon, which he cannot dismiss until he uses it. Kite was killed by Neferpitou, and his body was turned into a puppet to train Chimera Ants. After being captured by Knuckle and Shoot, Gon swore to save him and get revenge. It later emerged that Meruem's twin sister, discovered on the Queen's corpse, is actually Kite reborn as a female Chimera Ant.

Ging believes Crazy Slots has a number that only appears when Kite "really doesn't want to die," which he thinks explains his survival. Named Reina by Colt, Kite quickly grew up, regained her former human male memories and personality, and helped Gon overcome his depression. She also forced Koala, the koala-humanoid Chimera Ant hitman, to become her subordinate as penance for killing a girl whose appearance Kite now has. Kite placed tenth in the series' first popularity poll.

Melody

Melody works as a Music Hunter and serves as one of Neon’s bodyguards, known for her gentle and patient nature. She has a talent for making others feel comfortable and is always willing to hear their troubles. Leorio once observed that she is among the very few people Kurapika has ever trusted enough to confide in. Her outward appearance stands in stark contrast to her warm personality.

This is because she was cursed by the Sonata of Darkness, a musical composition supposedly written by Satan. One night, while drunk, a friend played the piece. Melody heard only the first movement of the flute solo and was left with a short stature and a disfigured right arm. Her friend, however, suffered far worse: his whole body became twisted like her arm, and he died shortly after performing it.

In exchange for this curse, Melody gained her Nen abilities. Her main goal is to locate the Sonata of Darkness and destroy it. When she plays an instrument, she can emit her aura to ease others’ exhaustion. She also possesses exceptionally sharp hearing, allowing her to read a person’s emotional state by listening to their heartbeat.

She can detect lies or when someone has completely lost their temper. In the Dark Continent arc, Melody returns as part of Kurapika’s group and becomes a bodyguard for Prince Kacho. Her character was inspired by Nausicaä and Yupa from Hayao Miyazaki’s Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind, or possibly Ashitaka from Princess Mononoke instead of Yupa. She placed 20th in the series’ second popularity poll.
