Gronckle
The heavy, short-winged dragon species of Fishlegs' Meatlug, maker of Gronckle Iron.
The Gronckle is a dragon species in the How to Train Your Dragon franchise. Fishlegs rides Meatlug, a brown female Gronckle whose husky build and short wingspan cost her the speed and aerobatic agility of other dragons. The Book of Dragons short places the Gronckle in the Boulder class together with the Whispering Death.
Lore & Background
A Gronckle can eat a particular combination of iron ore and rocks and regurgitate Gronckle Iron, a lightweight but very strong metal. In the series Fishlegs uses the Dragon Eye to find Dark Deep, the ancestral island of the Gronckles, which the Gronckles end up sharing with a lonely Catastrophic Quaken. Other Gronckle riders include Gothi, the village shaman, and Dagur, who names his Gronckle Shattermaster. In Cressida Cowell's novels Snotlout's sidekick Dogsbreath the Duhbrain rides a Gronckle called Seaslug.
