How to Train Your Dragon Codexery

Gobber

Berk's blacksmith, Stoick's best friend and Hiccup's mentor.

Gobber the Belch is the blacksmith of Berk, Stoick's best friend and advisor, and Hiccup's mentor, voiced by Craig Ferguson in the films and by Chris Edgerly in the television series and played by Nick Frost in the live-action remake. He teaches the tribe's young dragon-training recruits, and in the live-action films he wears interchangeable prosthetics where his right hand used to be.

Lore & Background

Hiccup builds his mechanical devices as Gobber's apprentice in the forge. After the battle with the Red Death, Gobber makes new prosthetics for Hiccup's lost foot and Toothless's tail fin. In How to Train Your Dragon 2 he and Stoick track Hiccup to Valka's nest; an early draft of that film had Gobber, not Stoick, killed by the brainwashed Toothless. In the television series he bonds with a Hotburple named Grump, and in the short Legend of the Boneknapper Dragon he leads the young Vikings on a quest to kill the Boneknapper, with flashbacks to how he came to look as he does. In Homecoming he stages a pageant that casts Stoick as the hero who united Vikings and dragons.

Reader's Guide

In The Hidden World he is described as a seasoned warrior, blacksmith and dragon dentist. In Cressida Cowell's novels Gobber the Belch is a hulking, temperamental Viking who runs the Viking Initiation Programme.
