Night Fury
The rarest dragon of all, and the breed of Hiccup's Toothless.
The Night Fury is a dragon breed in the How to Train Your Dragon films and series, and the breed of Hiccup's dragon Toothless. The 2010 film presents it as the rarest of all dragons, faster, more aerodynamic and more powerful than the other species, and large enough to carry both Hiccup and Astrid. Toothless has dark black scales, retractable teeth, plasma blasts and the ability to find his way in the dark by echolocation. In Cressida Cowell's novels Toothless is not a Night Fury but is believed to be a Common or Garden Dragon.

Hiccup shoots down a Night Fury with a bolas launcher during a raid, tearing off half of its tail fin, and cannot bring himself to kill it; he names it Toothless and builds a harness and prosthetic fin so that they can fly together. In the series Hiccup finds a map in Bork's notes to an island said to be home to Night Furies. In The Hidden World the dragon hunter Grimmel the Grisly boasts of having killed nearly every Night Fury, and Toothless finds a mate in the Light Fury, a white female sub-species of the Night Fury.
