Mortarion is the Primarch of the Death Guard. One book in the series opens with his own account of his childhood on Barbarus, a planet with a toxic atmosphere ruled by tyrannical warlords, and his attempt to liberate its people.

Before the Siege of Terra, Mortarion and the Death Guard slowly succumb to debilitating diseases as their ships malfunction during a journey through the Warp; it is finally revealed that Typhus, whom Mortarion had known since Barbarus, sabotaged the systems to become favoured of the Plague God Nurgle. After his failed mission to persuade the Khan to join Horus, a weakened Mortarion rampages across the remnants of Magnus' domain. Horus enlists him to retrace the Emperor's steps on Molech, and he is later sent ahead as the vanguard of the traitor fleet.
