In Campaign Evolved, the player can wield the Energy Sword for the first time in a remake of Combat Evolved, as the development team sought to integrate gameplay mechanics and features first introduced in later Halo games. Lore & Background
The Energy Sword was not usable by the player until Halo 2 (2004). In Campaign Evolved, the development team integrated this weapon into the remake of Combat Evolved's campaign, allowing players to wield it against Covenant enemies. The weapon is part of a broader effort to bring mechanics, weapons, and narrative additions from other Halo games into Campaign Evolved. The game's creative director, Max Szalgor, stated that an aim of Campaign Evolved is to faithfully rebuild every encounter and mission in Combat Evolved with enhancements to fidelity, including the ability to use every weapon used by the Covenant such as the Energy Sword. The weapon's inclusion reflects the team's desire to provide player choice in customizing gameplay, as noted by executive producer Damon Conn.
In Their Own Story
In Campaign Evolved, the Energy Sword is available for the player to acquire and use during missions against the Covenant. The weapon is part of the expanded arsenal that includes nine additional weapons beyond the original Combat Evolved selection. Players can wield the Energy Sword in combat, using it to engage enemies at close range. The game also features the ability to hijack vehicles piloted by the Covenant, a mechanic introduced in Halo 2 onwards, which can be performed while armed with the Energy Sword. The weapon's inclusion allows players to experience a combat style that was not possible in the original 2001 release.
Reader's Guide
The Energy Sword is a plasma-based melee blade that can be obtained during Campaign Evolved's campaign. It is one of the weapons added from later Halo titles, specifically Halo 2 and Halo 3. The weapon is effective in close-quarters combat against Covenant forces, including the Jiralhanae 'Brutes' and the Flood. Players can use the Energy Sword in conjunction with the game's new movement options, such as sprinting, which is enabled by default but can be toggled. The weapon can also be used while driving vehicles, as the Warthog has been redesigned to include a fourth seat for a full four-man fireteam. The Energy Sword is part of the game's expanded cooperative multiplayer, supporting up to four players online with cross-platform play and cross-progression.
