Forerunners
The ancient race that built the Halo Array and left the galaxy after firing it.
The Forerunners are an ancient species in the Halo backstory, one of the races created by the Precursors; they attacked their former masters and drove the Precursors to near extinction. They later fought spacefaring ancient humanity and, after defeating it, reduced humanity to a primitive level while they concentrated on the threat of the Flood.
Lore & Background
To stop the Flood the Forerunners conceived the Halo Array, ring-shaped megastructures that destroy all sentient life in the galaxy to starve the parasite, which could be activated from the Ark, a repository of life outside the rings' range. The surviving Forerunners reseeded life and left the Milky Way. The Covenant later worship them as gods.
