Dr. Catherine Halsey is the creator of the SPARTAN-II supersoldier project and the source of the artificial intelligence Cortana. Cortana was derived from the cloned brain of Dr. Halsey; Halsey's synapses became the basis for Cortana's processors. Halsey sees Cortana as a teenage version of herself: smarter than her parents, always "talking, learning, and eager to share her knowledge." In the Halo television series, Halsey creates Cortana by cloning herself and then copying her clone's brain patterns (which also kills her), implanting Cortana directly into Master Chief's neural pathways as a means of keeping Master Chief and other Spartans in line.
