The Covenant Empire
The alien theocracy at war with humanity through the original Halo trilogy.
The Covenant is the alliance of alien species, united by the worship of the Forerunners, that wages a genocidal war on humanity in the Halo series. Searching for Forerunner relics, the Covenant found humans at Harvest; its leaders learned the Forerunners had designated humanity their reclaimers and, to keep that truth hidden, started the war.
Lore & Background
Its species include the Sangheili (Elites), Unggoy (Grunts), Jackals, Hunters and Brutes, led by the Prophets. The Covenant is defeated in Halo 3; afterwards splinter factions form under leaders such as Jul 'Mdama and Sali 'Nyon, and a surviving Prophet, Dovo Nesto, seeks to rebuild the Covenant Empire in Halo: Empty Throne.
