Great Journey
A holy lie that united an empire only to shatter it when the truth was revealed.
The Great Journey was the central religious doctrine of the Covenant Empire, promising that faithful followers would transcend their physical forms to become divine beings upon activating the Halo Array. The Covenant believed that Forerunner ringworlds, known as Halos, would provide a path to salvation. Unaware that the Halos were in fact intended to be weapons of mass destruction rather than salvation, the Covenant attempt to activate the rings on three separate occasions throughout the series.

Lore & Background
The Covenant leadership – the High Prophets – declare humanity an affront to their gods, and prosecute a lengthy genocidal campaign against the technologically inferior race. The Covenant discover that the Forerunners designated humanity 'reclaimers' of their legacy, and that the Covenant religion is built on falsehoods; to prevent the truth from being uncovered, they instigate a genocidal war against humanity. In 2552, the Covenant discover and destroy Reach, one of humanity's greatest military strongholds. A human ship fleeing the battle discovers a Forerunner ringworld, Alpha Halo. The Covenant believe the activation of these rings are key to bringing about salvation, but the ring is destroyed by the human supersoldier Master Chief. Soon after, the Covenant falls into civil war as the truth of the Halo rings' purpose is revealed: they are actually weapons of mass destruction built to stop the spread of the parasitic Flood. The disgraced Covenant commander known as the Arbiter ultimately allies with the Master Chief to stop the Covenant and Flood, ending the Human-Covenant War.
In Their Own Story
The Prophet's voice echoed through the throne room, smooth as oil but sharp as a blade. 'Soon,' he whispered, his glistening eyes fixed on the hologram of the ring, 'we shall leave our flesh behind and ascend to the stars.' The Sangheili commander stood motionless, his plasma rifle heavy in hand. He had fought for this moment, bled for this promise, yet a cold knot formed in his gut as he recalled the words of the heretic humans who spoke of death, not divinity. 'Is it true?' the warrior asked, his voice trembling with the weight of a lifetime's devotion hanging in the balance. The Prophet smiled, but it did not reach his eyes. 'Faith requires no proof,' came the reply, just before the doors blew open and the world began to burn.
Reader's Guide
The Great Journey was the foundational mythos of the Covenant Empire, a theological construct designed by the San'Shyuum to unify disparate alien species under a single banner. It posited that the Forerunners, an ancient and god-like race, had ascended to a higher plane of existence via seven massive ring-shaped structures known as Halo Installations. The Prophets claimed these rings were not weapons but sacred portals, and that activating them would grant all faithful species a similar ascension. This doctrine was the primary driver of the Covenant's military campaigns against humanity, whom they labeled heretics for their possession of Forerunner artifacts that could activate the rings prematurely. The belief system was so potent that it suppressed logical inquiry; any evidence suggesting the rings were death-dealing weapons was dismissed as demonic deception or human lies. The hierarchy relied on this faith to maintain order, with the Sangheili acting as the enforcers and the Unggoy as cannon fodder, all marching toward a shared destiny. However, the revelation that the Halo Array was actually a galactic-scale extermination device triggered the Great Schism. When the truth became undeniable during the final stages of the war, the Covenant's unity shattered instantly. The Sangheili, realizing they had been deceived, allied with humanity to stop the activation of the remaining rings, while the Jiralhanae (Brutes) and Prophets attempted to force the Journey anyway. The collapse of this belief system marked the end of the Covenant Empire, leaving a power vacuum that would define the galaxy for decades to come.
