Long before the rise of humanity or the Covenant, the Flood emerged as a cosmic plague. It originated from the Precursors, whom the Forerunners had driven to extinction, though the exact mechanism of their transformation into this parasite remains one of the galaxy's oldest mysteries. The Forerunners eventually discovered that the only way to stop the Flood was to destroy all sentient life in the galaxy, leading to the construction of the Halo Array. When activated, these rings would fire a pulse that killed all neural-based life within range, effectively starving the parasite by removing its food source. The infection process is brutal and swift. In its earliest stages, spores infect living hosts, turning them into zombie-like 'Infector Forms' or 'Combat Forms.' As biomass accumulates, these forms combine into massive 'Carrier Forms' that explode to release more spores. Eventually, the collective consciousness coalesces into a Gravemind, a colossal, sentient mass of flesh and nerve tissue capable of strategic thought, manipulation, and even communicating with other species through telepathy. The Flood adapts rapidly, learning from its hosts and evolving new forms to counter threats, making it an ever-shifting nightmare for any civilization foolish enough to encounter it.

The airlock hissed open, revealing the corridor bathed in emergency red light. It was silent at first, save for the dripping of condensation and the low hum of failing life support. "Contact front!" he shouted, but his voice was swallowed by the sudden screech that tore through the ship.
