Unggoy
Small, frightened, and numerous, they fight for survival in a galaxy that fears them.
The Unggoy, universally recognized as Grunts, form the teeming masses of the Covenant's war machine. These diminutive methane-breathers hail from the toxic moon of Balaho in the Sigma Octanus system. Though physically frail and lacking natural armor, they comprise the vast majority of Covenant infantry. While often dismissed as expendable shock troops, their survival relies on a complex social fabric built on camaraderie and religious fervor. They compensate for individual tactical weakness with overwhelming numbers and an unshakeable loyalty to one another.

Lore & Background
Evolution on Balaho shaped the Unggoy into a species adapted to high gravity and methane-rich air; outside this environment, their rebreathers are life-support necessities. Originally victims of Kig-Yar enslavement, they were liberated by the San'Shyuum and integrated into the Covenant hierarchy, where Sangheili commanders oversaw their deployment. This structure cemented their status as the lowest caste, valued primarily for expendability in shock assaults or labor duties. Despite this subjugation, Unggoy society is surprisingly vibrant when not under military command; they value friendship highly, often forming tight-knit squads that rely on one another for emotional support in the face of overwhelming odds.
In Their Own Story
The airlock hissed open, flooding the cramped corridor with the sterile scent of recycled oxygen. Beside him, a larger Unggoy named Ploot trembled, his yellow eyes wide behind the glass of his helmet. "Do not shake," Rik muttered, nudging his friend with a webbed foot. "The Elites watch us. If we show fear, they will shoot first and ask questions later."
Ploot let out a high-pitched squeak that sounded suspiciously like a laugh. "And if the humans shoot?" he whispered. Rik looked down the dark tunnel where the red laser sights of the enemy danced against the metal walls. "Then we run," he said, his voice steady despite the chaos around them. "We run together, or we do not run at all." With a collective squeal of defiance, they charged into the fray.
Reader's Guide
The Unggoy represent the backbone of Covenant ground operations, functioning as a numerical shield that absorbs fire while heavier units advance. In combat, they rely on swarm tactics and close-quarters weapons like plasma pistols or Needlers to overwhelm opponents. While individually fragile and prone to panic when leaders fall, coordinated squads can pin down superior forces through sheer volume of fire.
Did You Know?
- Unggoy are incapable of surviving outside a methane-rich atmosphere without their rebreathers, making them entirely dependent on life-support technology in most environments.
- The species has a unique cultural trait where they often refer to themselves by numbers rather than names when serving in the Covenant military hierarchy.
- During the Great Schism, the Unggoy were among the first to realize the Prophets had lied about the Great Journey, leading to widespread rebellions within the Covenant ranks.
- Unggoy are capable of piloting vehicles and operating heavy machinery, though they are rarely given command roles due to their perceived lack of discipline.
