Long before the Covenant or humanity rose to prominence, the Forerunners faced an existential threat known as the Flood. The Ur-Didact proposed a radical solution: the Composer. This device could convert living beings into digital data, effectively removing them from the physical realm where the Flood could consume them. However, his plan was rejected by the Council, and he was imprisoned in a deep-space cryptum to preserve him for future use, leaving his hatred for humanity—who were once considered livestock by his people—to fester over thirty thousand years.
When the Didact is finally awakened by the Covenant's accidental discovery of his prison on Requiem (Installation 04), he finds the galaxy in chaos. The Halo Array has fired, wiping out most life, and the Flood has been contained but not destroyed. Viewing humanity as a genetic plague that must be purged to save the universe from future infection, he unleashes an army of Promethean knights built from his own digitized soldiers. The conflict escalates as the Didact attempts to activate a second Composer on Earth, aiming to convert all human consciousness instantly.
This forces Master Chief Petty Officer John-117 and the AI Cortana to confront an enemy who possesses technology far beyond their comprehension.
