As guardians of this faith, they policed the lower species and led crusades against heretics with terrifying efficiency. However, their rigid adherence to tradition blinded them to the truth that the Prophets were manipulating them for power, using the Sangheili as disposable pawns in a cosmic game. The turning point came during the Human-Covenant War's final years when the High Prophet of Truth revealed the true nature of the Halo rings and ordered the immediate execution of the Sangheili. Betrayed by their own allies, the Sangheili fractured into civil war against the Jiralhanae, who had been groomed to replace them. This conflict, known as the Great Schism, shattered the Covenant and left the galaxy in chaos. In the aftermath, many Sangheili sought redemption through cooperation with humanity, realizing that their shared enemy was not each other, but the fanatics who sought galactic destruction.
