In the novel, Vesper Lynd works at MI6 headquarters as a personal assistant to the Head of Section S. She is lent to Bond to assist him in his mission to bankrupt Le Chiffre. She poses as a radio seller and later as Bond's companion. She is a double agent working for the Soviet Ministry of Internal Affairs (MVD), blackmailed by SMERSH because of her romantic involvement with a Polish RAF operative. She dies by suicide, leaving a note admitting her treachery. In the 2006 film, she is a foreign liaison agent from HM Treasury's Financial Action Task Force, assigned to manage funds for Bond's mission. She falls in love with Bond, but betrays him under duress from an organization that kidnapped her boyfriend; she drowns in Venice. In the 1967 parody, she is a former secret agent turned multi-millionaire who betrays Evelyn Tremble.

The rain had stopped, but the glass walls of the facility still wept. Vesper pressed her back against the corridor's cold surface, counting the seconds between the guard's footsteps. Three. Four. Five. The window was six. She didn't need to rush. She never did. Through the intercom, Bond's voice crackled, tinny and slightly out of breath. "You're two minutes behind schedule, Lynd." "And you're three minutes behind on your cover story," she replied, already sliding the magazine out of her sidearm to check the count. "Shall I file the paperwork?" A pause. The faintest edge of a smile in his voice. "No. Just get to the east stairwell. I'll handle the loud part." She smiled back at the empty corridor, holstered the weapon, and moved. The loud part was never her department. It never had been.
