Dato' Sudirman bin Haji Arshad (25 May 1954 – 22 February 1992), known simply as Sudirman, was a Malaysian singer, songwriter, and actor. He first broke into music by winning the Bintang RTM singing competition on 11 August 1976. His biggest career milestone came on 19 March 1989, when he was named "Asia's No. 1 Performer" at the Asian Popular Music Awards held at London's Royal Albert Hall. Over the years, he earned several nicknames: the "Singing Lawyer," the "People's Singer," the "Patriotic Singer," and the "Elvis Presley and Claude François of Malaysia." Beyond performing, he worked as a lawyer, composer, writer (producing memoirs and children's books), cartoonist, and entrepreneur. He also represented Malaysia at the 1985 ABU Popular Song Contest.
Born on 25 May 1954 in Temerloh, Pahang, Sudirman was the youngest of seven children. His father, Arshad Hassan, managed a local bus company, while his mother, Romlah Dahalan, worked as a seamstress and served as a Malaysian state assemblywoman in Pahang during the 1950s. Because of her political work, Romlah was often away, and Sudirman missed her deeply. Both parents were also involved in the fabric and clothing business. According to sources, his father named him after Indonesian army general Sudirman, hoping he would grow up to be a brave warrior. When Sudirman was five, his mother passed away; the exact cause of her death is not consistently documented. His father then married Mariam Mohamad, but Sudirman noted that his stepmother struggled to adjust to her new family. From a young age, he loved singing and entertaining, often performing for his family and neighbors, who encouraged him.
He completed secondary school at Sultan Abu Bakar School in Temerloh. After turning down a scholarship to study medicine, he enrolled in law at the University of Malaya in 1976. He graduated with a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) in 1978, alongside Malaysia's current and former Attorneys General Idrus Harun and Abdul Gani Patail. In 1982, he began his pupillage under Mr. Ong Joo Theam of Messrs Abdul Aziz, Ong & Co., and was called to the Malaysian Bar in 1980. He practiced law briefly but left due to a lack of interest.
