Weyla is an extinct genus of scallop within the family Pectinidae. These bivalves lived during the Early Jurassic and were found worldwide. They are thought to have been sedentary creatures that lived partly buried in the seafloor.
Taxonomy
The genus includes many species, such as *Weyla alata*, *Weyla ambongoensis*, *Weyla bodenbenderi*, *Weyla domeykoi*, *Weyla lacazei*, *Weyla meeki*, *Weyla pradoana*, *Weyla rollieri*, *Weyla titan*, *Weyla unca*, and *Weyla yukonensis*.
Distribution
Weyla had a global range, making it a cosmopolitan genus. In the Hettangian age, the only confirmed fossils come from Canada. By the Sinemurian, its range expanded to a circumpacific and southern distribution along the Pacific coast of the Americas, including western Canada, Mexico (Sonora), Texas, Ecuador, Peru, Argentina, and Chile.
During the Pliensbachian, Weyla appeared in France, Spain, and Morocco, reaching the Tethys Ocean through the Hispanic Corridor or the Proto-Atlantic as the supercontinent Pangaea broke apart. While it continued to occur in the Americas into the Toarcian, no European fossils from that time are known. The genus also persisted in North Africa and spread further into Africa and the Middle East, including Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, Kenya, and Madagascar.
