Penetrance is a concept in genetics that describes the proportion of individuals carrying a particular gene variant who also express the associated trait. In medical genetics, it specifically refers to the likelihood that a disease-causing mutation will produce clinical symptoms. Penetrance is distinct from variable expressivity, which concerns the degree or severity of symptoms.
