Plot
Not long after the first game, Starfy is back home at Pufftop Palace playing with his pal Moe. The villain Ogura, still trapped in the Magic Jar, sends his ten children into the sky. They stir up storms and earthquakes that break the jar, freeing Ogura. He snatches Starfy’s mother, and Starfy and Moe tumble from the palace into the ocean. On their journey back up, they fight Ogura and his kids. Along the way, Starfy aids many characters by finding lost items and beating troublesome foes. Eventually, Starfy and his friends battle Ogura and all ten children to force him back into the Magic Jar.
Gameplay
In Densetsu no Starfy 2, the hero can run, leap, and attack by spinning. As the adventure continues, he regains travel items and animal helpers from the first game. Each area usually contains a set number of stages, and every stage is broken into four smaller sections. Ogura’s children serve as the bosses, hiding at the end of each world’s last stage. Most other stages require Starfy to find a lost or stolen item for someone else. On land, Starfy runs and jumps, but in water he moves more freely and can push obstacles. The game also features minigames, some of which resemble Atari’s Breakout series.
Development
Nintendo and Tose moved on to develop Densetsu no Starfy 2 after the release of its predecessor, taking less than a year to develop and release it. Like its predecessor, Nintendo and Tose aired animated television commercials for the game and released promotional merchandise, including a music album with songs sung by Kazuki Saya. The game was planned for release in China on the iQue Game Boy Advance system, but this release was cancelled due to high piracy; however, the Chinese translation was fully completed and can be played through emulation.
