Mycogen

A reclusive sector of Trantor that keeps the memory of Aurora.

Mycogen is a reclusive sector of Trantor that is said to value its ancient history. Its people, the Mycogenians, are believed to descend from the inhabitants of the Spacer world Aurora, who emigrated to Trantor after the decline of the Spacers. In Prelude to Foundation, Hari Seldon and Dors Venabili are sheltered there and received by its leader, Sunmaster Fourteen. Mycogen has a restrictive caste system in which women have no rights.

Lore & Background

The Mycogenians never forgot Aurora, which they call their home planet. Their treasured religious and historical book mentions Aurora and robots, which do not exist in the Empire. Hari Seldon obtains the book and later enters the Sacratorium, the Mycogenian temple, in disguise, hoping to interview a robot supposedly housed there; he and Dors Venabili are detected and face execution until Chetter Hummin arrives to save them. In the Dahl sector they are afterwards told that the Aurora of the Mycogenians is not the original world but the enemy of the original human planet, Earth.

Reader's Guide

Mycogen is a unique sector located within the massive planetary city of Trantor, serving as a cultural and biological island amidst the galactic metropolis. Its primary role in the Foundation narrative is to act as a repository for lost history, specifically regarding the origins of humanity on Earth. For Hari Seldon, visiting Mycogen was not merely an academic exercise but a crucial investigation into the roots of human civilization, which he believed held the key to predicting and shaping the future through psychohistory.

The sector matters because it challenges the assumption that all of Trantor shares a unified culture or history. While the Empire relies on technology and bureaucracy, Mycogen relies on biological tradition and religious dogma. This contrast highlights the diversity of human adaptation over millennia. The Mycogenians' belief in their own purity and isolation creates a barrier that Seldon must navigate to find truth.

Their existence proves that even in a galaxy-spanning empire, pockets of humanity can remain untouched by time, preserving secrets that could alter the course of history. For readers, Mycogen represents the mystery of human origins and the power of cultural preservation. It serves as a reminder that history is not always written in books but often hidden in the rituals and silences of isolated communities. Understanding Mycogen is essential to grasping the full scope of Seldon's plan and the deep, ancient connections that bind humanity together across the stars.
