Salvor Hardin

The first Mayor who turned nuclear power into divine law.

Salvor Hardin is a fictional character in Isaac Asimov's Foundation series, introduced in the 1942 short story "Foundation" as a key figure who later becomes the first Mayor of Terminus. He defuses political crises with four nearby barbarian kingdoms while securing their dependence on the Foundation. In the original stories, he is described by Gizmodo critics Josh Wimmer and Alasdair Wilkins as a "staggeringly brilliant politician" and a "lively, independent thinker." Hardin recognizes religion as "the best way of doing some good at a time when science has become tainted with the Empire's failure," employing Foundation priests to manage new planets. He famously outmaneuvers enemies without lifting a finger, reducing Prince Wienis to a whimpering mess through sheer ingenuity.

Lore & Background

In "Foundation" and "Bridle and Saddle" (later renamed "The Mayors"), Hardin faces threats from the Four Kingdoms, specifically Anacreon. In "Foundation," he visits the other three kingdoms and convinces them that nuclear power must not fall to Anacreon alone; their joint ultimatum makes the Foundation indispensable to all. In "The Mayors," Anacreon launches a direct military assault on Terminus using an abandoned Imperial battlecruiser. Hardin has secretly had a kill switch installed in the cruiser, and its crew mutinies. When Prince Regent Wienis orders Hardin's execution, the royal guards refuse. Wienis then tries to shoot Hardin with an energy blaster, but Hardin is shielded by a personal force field, and Wienis turns the weapon on himself.

Reader's Guide

Hardin appears in the May 1942 issue of Astounding Science Fiction as "Foundation" and June 1942's "Bridle and Saddle," published together in 1951. He is voiced by Lee Montague in the 1973 BBC Radio 4 adaptation's episode two, "The Mayors." In the 2021 Apple TV+ series, a gender-swapped version is portrayed by Leah Harvey, announced in December 2019. This version serves as Warden and protector of Terminus 35 years after Seldon's trial. She resists the Vault's null field and outwits Anacreon forces led by Grand Huntress Phara Keaen. After capturing and losing Keaen, Hardin is captured herself and taken aboard the warship Invictus. She kills Keaen before Keaen can destroy the Vault, and in "The Leap" learns she is the biological daughter of Gaal Dornick and Raych Foss. In Season 2, she dies taking a bullet meant for Dornick in "Creation Myths," an event that proves the future can change.
