Golan Trevize

The Councilman whose gut feeling reshaped the destiny of mankind.

Golan Trevize is a Councilman from the Foundation who serves as the central protagonist in Isaac Asimov's novels Foundation's Edge and Foundation and Earth. Introduced in Foundation's Edge, set five hundred years after the establishment of the Foundation, he later sets out to find Earth alongside historian Janov Pelorat and Bliss, a native of the planet Gaia. Trevize's mission is driven by deep-seated doubt regarding his own intuitive endorsement of Galaxia as humanity's future, an instinctive choice made at the conclusion of Foundation's Edge. Unlike traditional leaders who rely on data or logic, Trevize possesses a unique ability to make correct decisions based solely on intuition, a trait that places him at the heart of a galactic search for Earth.

Lore & Background

Trevize's journey begins with a quest to settle his doubts about the all-encompassing noosphere of Galaxia. Accompanied by Pelorat and Bliss, he travels through distinct phases of exploration defined by specific coordinates. First, they visit Comporellon, which claims to be the oldest currently inhabited planet in the galaxy; there they are imprisoned but negotiate their way out, and a historian gives them the coordinates of three Spacer planets.

Their voyage takes them to the desolate, collapsing ecology of Aurora, where Trevize is nearly killed by a pack of wild dogs until Bliss manipulates the dogs' emotions to compel a retreat. They then proceed to Solaria, whose people have engineered themselves into self-reproducing hermaphrodites intolerant of physical contact; there they are nearly killed by the Solarian Sarton Bander, but Bliss deflects the energy Bander uses as a weapon, accidentally killing Bander. During their escape from Bander's underground mansion, they rescue his young child, Fallom.

Reader's Guide

Trevize's defining characteristic is his 'intuitive decision making,' which allows him to choose the correct future without logical proof. This ability drives the narrative of Foundation and Earth as he seeks validation for his choice of Galaxia. His journey involves navigating extreme dangers, from wild dogs on Aurora to energy weapons on Solaria, relying heavily on Bliss's telepathic capabilities for survival. A crucial turning point occurs when Trevize interacts with R. Daneel Olivaw on the Moon, who explains that he manipulated Trevize into making his decision at the end of Foundation's Edge, though not the decision itself. The story concludes with Trevize accepting a future where human internal warfare is ended through a collective consciousness, all while observing Fallom's alien gaze.
