Dors Venabili appears in Prelude to Foundation as a history professor recruited by reporter Chetter Hummin to protect mathematician Hari Seldon. Introduced at Streeling University, she accompanies Seldon through the dangerous sectors of Trantor, from Mycogen to Dahl and finally Wye. She is given lodging by Mycogenian authorities in Mycogen and rents rooms with Seldon in Dahl. Her presence is constant as they evade capture at Streeling University and face execution threats when Seldon attempts to enter the Sacratorium.

In the year 12,020 G.E., Dors Venabili was introduced to Hari Seldon at Streeling University by Chetter Hummin. Her role began as a protector during Seldon's first crisis: evading capture by the Emperor's forces after his presentation on psychohistory. She traveled with him to the Mycogen sector, where they were given lodging by Mycogenian authorities. There, she helped Seldon navigate life among the reclusive Mycogenians until he insisted on entering the Sacratorium in disguise, an act that nearly led to their execution.

Dors was present when they narrowly escaped thanks to Hummin's timely arrival. The pair then moved to the Dahl sector, renting rooms from Jirad Tisalver and meeting Mother Rittah, who spoke of Earth. Throughout these events, she remained by Seldon's side. Towards the novel's end, after Rashelle's coup failed in Wye, the truth about Hummin emerged: he was a robot named R. Daneel Olivaw.
