Lore & Background

Despite his successes, he never achieved total victory. He searched for the Second Foundation, which he feared could defeat him, until its First Speaker seized control of his mind and altered it; he then returned to Kalgan to live out the rest of his life as a peaceful despot. He died of natural causes, and after his death the Lords of Kalgan could not hold his Union of Worlds together; it disintegrated into a mere 27 worlds.

Reader's Guide

The Mule represents a critical stress test for Hari Seldon's Psychohistory. Originally designed to predict the trajectory of millions, the mathematical model assumed individual actions were negligible noise. However, this mutant warlord possessed the unique ability to alter human emotions directly, effectively rewriting social dynamics on a personal scale that rippled outward. This anomaly created a blind spot in the Plan, allowing him to conquer the outer worlds of the First Foundation with shocking speed before Seldon could have anticipated such a deviation.

His rise forced the hidden Second Foundation to reconsider its absolute secrecy. While they managed to preserve themselves from his search parties, the threat necessitated active intervention rather than passive observation. Ultimately, his obsession with destroying the Second Foundation proved to be his undoing. However, his legacy reshaped galactic history by proving that Psychohistory could be bypassed by singular biological anomalies.

This event cemented the necessity of the Second Foundation's existence as guardians against such unpredictable variables, ensuring the Plan survived despite the breach in its mathematical certainty.
