The Companions of the Hall, also called the Companions of Mithral Hall, are a fictional adventuring party in R. A. Salvatore's The Legend of Drizzt novels set in the Forgotten Realms. The group consists of the drow ranger Drizzt Do'Urden, his human partner Catti-brie, the dwarf Bruenor Battlehammer, the human barbarian Wulfgar, and the halfling rogue Regis. Development and publication

Salvatore originally planned Wulfgar as the protagonist of his first Forgotten Realms novel. He was told not to use characters from Douglas Niles's Darkwalker on Moonshae and instead created a drow ranger named Drizzt as Wulfgar's sidekick. While writing an early scene in The Crystal Shard, Salvatore decided Drizzt should become the lead. Catti-brie was added after an editor noted the lack of a female lead; Salvatore named her after his daughter Caitlin Brielle, born fifteen days after he delivered the draft. He later faced hostile responses as Catti-brie grew more powerful, linking her development to a shift away from female characters who existed only to be rescued. Salvatore ended Passage to Dawn (1996) with Drizzt and Catti-brie riding off into the sunset, intending it as his final book about the group after falling out with TSR, Inc. When the Forgotten Realms chronology was advanced for fourth edition Dungeons & Dragons, Catti-brie and Regis died during the Spellplague, and Bruenor died later. Salvatore said the mandate made him more creative and drew on his experiences of unexpected bereavement. In The Companions (2013), Bruenor, Catti-brie, Regis, and Wulfgar receive second lives and rejoin Drizzt. Salvatore was nervous readers would reject their return and used their memories of earlier lives to alter their goals.

Characters and portrayal

The group known as the Companions of the Hall centers on Drizzt, a drow exile who forges bonds on the surface. Wulfgar fills the role of the young warrior the series was built around. Bruenor, the leader of Clan Battlehammer, acts as the group's father figure. Catti-brie, whose father was killed by goblins, is raised by Bruenor and becomes an archer. She is among the first humans in Icewind Dale to befriend Drizzt, and her efforts create the friendship between Drizzt and Bruenor. Though initially betrothed to Wulfgar, she later marries Drizzt. They are joined by Wulfgar and Regis, a halfling rogue who is the least combat-focused member. Drizzt's magical panther Guenhwyvar often fights alongside them. In The Crystal Shard, the main adventurers are Drizzt, Bruenor, Wulfgar, and Regis, with Catti-brie in a minor role. Streams of Silver follows the four searching for Mithral Hall; Catti-brie is captured while chasing them, escapes, and joins the group. In The Companions, the goddess Mielikki offers Catti-brie reincarnation as a mortal newborn. She returns as Ruqiah, a Bedine woman born in 1463 DR.

Other media

The five Companions appear as non-player characters in the 2000 role-playing game Baldur's Gate II: Shadows of Amn, where the player's party may encounter them after leaving the Underdark and enlist their help against the vampire Bodhi. The Icewind Dale Trilogy was adapted into graphic novels collected by IDW Publishing in the 2012 volume Dungeons & Dragons: Forgotten Realms—The Legend of Drizzt Omnibus, Volume 2. All five are playable heroes in Wizards of the Coast's 2011 cooperative board game The Legend of Drizzt. Drizzt, Bruenor, Catti-brie, Wulfgar, and Regis are playable characters in Idle Champions of the Forgotten Realms, forming the Companions of the Hall affiliation. They were released as companion characters in Neverwinter during its 2021 'Summer of Drizzt' promotion. Four are the protagonists of the 2021 video game Dungeons & Dragons: Dark Alliance, which takes place after The Crystal Shard and has Drizzt, Bruenor, Catti-brie, and Wulfgar as playable characters. Salvatore advised the developers not to retell stories already covered by the novels; Tuque placed a new adventure between published stories.

Reception

Rob Bricken of io9 called The Crystal Shard an ensemble novel overshadowed by Drizzt, criticizing Catti-brie's limited part and regarding Bruenor, Wulfgar, and Regis as variations on familiar types. He found Catti-brie better developed in Streams of Silver, where he considered her a protagonist. Reviews of The Companions disagreed over the group's return: Kelly Jensen of SF Crowsnest praised the novel and the bond among the five, while Tomasz Cybulski of Poltergeist criticized the parallel childhood narratives as repetitive and slow. Reviews of Dark Alliance also differed: Andy Kelly of PC Gamer praised the different combat styles and Salvatore's involvement, while Garrick Durham-Raley of MMORPG.com found the game did little to communicate its story or explore Icewind Dale despite using the Companions.
