The Weave

The source of all spellcasting in the Realms.

The Weave is the source of both arcane and divine spellcasting in the Forgotten Realms. Raw magic is dangerous for mortals, and the Weave shields the world from it while letting magic users cast spells.

Lore & Background

It runs through everything and is bound to the deity who maintains it, the goddess Mystra; killing that deity destroys the Weave. Reckless magic can damage it and leave areas of dead or wild magic. It has been destroyed several times: when the archwizard Karsus tried to take Mystryl's power, and when Mystra was murdered in 1385 DR, which set off the Spellplague. The goddess Shar created a counterpart, the Shadow Weave.
