Cecil Harvey
A Dark Knight who abandoned violence to become a Paladin.
Cecil Harvey is the protagonist of the 1991 video game Final Fantasy IV. Created as the first character for the game's development, he begins his journey as a Dark Knight serving the Kingdom of Baron within the Red Wings militia. His narrative is defined by a profound struggle with the morality of his actions while under orders from his king. The concept of a Dark Knight transforming into a Paladin was implemented at the start of development to tie character growth directly to in-battle abilities. Cecil eventually overcomes his internal demons, abandoning his role as a Dark Knight to become a Paladin, a transformation recognized by critics as a representation of abandoning violence and marking a shift toward a more complete, mature character.

Lore & Background
The story opens with Cecil successfully stealing the Water Crystal from Mysidia for Baron, though he immediately expresses doubt about the mission's morality. He and his friend Kain Highwind are ordered to deliver a package to the village of Mist; they inadvertently kill the mother of a young girl named Rydia when the package is revealed to be a bomb. Following this tragedy, Rydia attacks them, separating Cecil from Kain. The two travel together, with Rydia eventually growing comfortable with him after he protects her. His transformation into a Paladin occurs as he seeks redemption for these actions, shifting his focus from the aggression and self-injury associated with his Dark Knight armor to protecting his allies.
