Battle Fantasia
A 2.5D fighting game set in a fantasy storybook world.
Battle Fantasia is a fighting video game developed by Arc System Works, originally released in Japanese arcades in April 2007. It was ported to Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 in Japan in May 2008, with a North American Xbox 360 release in September 2008 by Aksys Games, and later PAL region releases in 2009. A PC version, Battle Fantasia: Revised Edition, was released globally on July 7, 2015. The game is notable for its stylistic departure from many fighting games, set in a fantasy storybook world, and for being an early 2.5D fighting game using three-dimensional character models restricted to a two-dimensional plane.

Lore & Background
Battle Fantasia was developed by Arc System Works beginning in 2006, as the company sought to expand its market beyond the Guilty Gear series. Emiko Iwasaki, previously an illustrator for Guilty Gear, was appointed director, one of few women in that role in Japanese game development. The game was the company's first title on Taito Type X² arcade hardware, supporting 720p resolution. Iwasaki was given freedom but was encouraged to retain Guilty Gear features and use 3D graphics to develop the company's 3D talent. Stylistically, the game's colorful fantasy art direction was chosen due to the popularity of role-playing games in Japan, overseen by graphic designer Junya Motomura. Gameplay was simplified to attract a broader audience, including female players. Beta tests began in October 2006, with official arcade release in April 2007.
Reader's Guide
Battle Fantasia is significant as an early 2.5D fighting game that bridged 2D gameplay with 3D graphics, a concept considered technologically challenging since Street Fighter EX. Its fantasy storybook setting and simplified mechanics represented a deliberate departure from the complex Guilty Gear series, aiming to attract casual and female players. The game received mixed or average reviews and low sales in Japan, with debut week sales of 3,100 (PS3) and 2,300 (Xbox 360). Western response was similarly mixed. The PC Revised Edition in 2015 updated balance and visual effects. Despite modest commercial success, Battle Fantasia is remembered for its unique aesthetic and as a stepping stone in Arc System Works' evolution toward 3D-rendered fighters. Its legacy includes influencing later 2.5D titles and demonstrating the viability of simplified fighting game design.
