Cob
The necromancer whose hunger to escape death drains the magic from Earthsea.
Cob is the dark mage behind the malaise in The Farthest Shore. Ged had defeated him many years earlier; afterwards Cob became an expert in necromancy, desperate to escape death and live forever, and in doing so opened a breach between the worlds that is sucking away all life.
Lore & Background
Ged and Arren find him in a house of dragon bones at the western tip of Selidor, the end of the world. Cob paralyzes Ged with the staff of a long-dead mage, and the dragon Orm Embar impales himself on it to crush Cob, but the undead Cob crawls back into the Dry Land. There Ged defeats him and closes the breach, at the cost of all his magic power. In Tehanu the twisted mage Aspen is revealed as one of Cob's followers.
