First appears: A Wizard of Earthsea

Lore & Background

Vetch first appears at the School on Roke, where he befriends Ged despite the young wizard's general aloofness and conflict with other students like Jasper. While Ged displays immense talent that inspires admiration from teachers, Vetch remains a supportive figure during this formative period. Later in the narrative, after Ged graduates and is haunted by a shadow creature released during a magical duel, he flees to the island of Iffish. There, he meets his old friend Vetch again.

Unlike Ged's solitary struggles against dragons or the stone of Terrenon, Vetch insists on joining him for the dangerous journey eastward beyond the last known lands. However, when they finally confront the shadow, Vetch stays behind on the island while Ged goes alone to name and merge with it. This decision transforms their dynamic from former classmates into active companions facing a shared cosmic threat together.

Reader's Guide

Vetch is defined by his loyalty and willingness to accompany Ged on dangerous quests. His key appearances occur at the School on Roke as an older student befriending a proud newcomer, and later on Iffish where he joins Ged's final voyage. To engage with Vetch's character in Earthsea lore, note that he represents the value of friendship over power; while others fear or envy Ged, Vetch chooses solidarity. His most significant action is insisting to join Ged when the wizard decides to hunt the shadow creature into the unknown East Reach. This partnership leads directly to the novel's resolution, where they reach the shadow together. From Iffish, Vetch sails with Ged eastward past all known lands until the shadow is finally named.
