Ged

From Duny of Gont to Archmage, he named his shadow and restored balance to Earthsea.

Ged is the true name of a fictional character in Ursula K. Le Guin's Earthsea realm, introduced in A Wizard of Earthsea. As a child known as Duny, he was born on the island of Gont to a bronzesmith and had red-brown skin. At age twelve, his use-name became Sparrowhawk after he called a sparrowhawk to his hand. Following an attack by Kargad raiders where Ged used spells to protect his village, Ogion took him in and helped his recovery, then accepted him as a pupil.

At the school on Roke, Ged opened a door to the Dry Land, releasing a shadow spirit that hunted him until he named it, realizing it was a dark part of himself. At around eighteen to nineteen years old, he traveled alone to Atuan to recover half of the Ring of Erreth Abke and freed the priestess Tenar. Ged served as Archmage for approximately twenty years before questing with Arren to stop Cob, who had opened a door between life and death. Closing that door cost Ged all his magic; he later lived on Gont with Tenar and her adopted daughter Therru (Tehanu), and in old age counseled the sorcerer Alder.

Lore & Background

Born on Gont Island with an innate gift for magic, Ged was sent to the School of Roke where his brilliance was matched by his impatience. A moment of youthful hubris unleashed a dark entity that hunted him across the seas, forcing him to confront the nature of power and identity. His journey became one of reconciliation rather than domination. In his thirties he travelled to the Tombs of Atuan to recover the other half of the Ring of Erreth-Akbe, and persuaded the young priestess Tenar to leave with him.

Eventually returning as Archmage, he guided the islands when magic began to fade from the world. In his middle age, he traveled with Arren to stop Cob's obsession with immortality. Closing the door Cob had opened between the living and the dead used up all of Ged's power, and he returned to Gont. He later found companionship with Tenar, now a widow with grown children, and her adopted daughter Tehanu. The story notes that Ogion died during this period.

Reader's Guide

Ged begins as a gifted but reckless boy from Gont Island, known for his arrogance and magical talent. His journey is defined by a grave mistake in youth that unleashes a dark shadow, forcing him to flee Roke Island. Over years of wandering, he learns humility and the true weight of responsibility. He eventually masters the shadow within himself, becoming one of the greatest wizards Earthsea has ever known.

As Archmage of Roke, Ged maintains the balance between life and death, though he struggles with the fading nature of magic itself. In his later years, he retires to Gont, where he finds companionship with Tenar, the former priestess of Atuan. This union symbolizes his acceptance of mortality and change rather than resisting it through power alone. His powers stem from knowledge of True Names in the Old Speech, allowing him to shape reality.

However, his greatest strength becomes wisdom gained through suffering. Key moments include naming the shadow across the sea, recovering the Ring of Erreth-Akbe from Atuan, and more than 20 years as Archmage.
