In the specific history of Universe 7, their role shifted dramatically from distant guardians to desperate survivors following a catastrophic encounter with Majin Buu. Before the events of Dragon Ball they were forced into a deadly confrontation with Majin Buu. The Grand Supreme Kai and his apprentice, the Southern Supreme Kai, attempted to fight Buu despite being weakened from dealing with a separate threat earlier. This intervention ultimately failed as Buu managed to absorb the two Supreme Kais, fundamentally altering the divine lineage.

Originally, the Grand Supreme Kai led the order, but his existence was altered when he and the Southern Supreme Kai faced the demon. During this conflict, Buu absorbed both deities; however, the influence of the absorbed Grand Supreme Kai dulled Buu's destructive nature, transforming him into a rotund, naive form. This absorption left only one survivor: Shin, the last surviving Supreme Kai. To prevent Buu from being freed, Shin killed Buu's master, Bibidi, so that the monster would remain sealed away on Earth. Later, Bibidi's son, Babidi, made it his goal to revive Buu, collecting energy for the revival.
