Beerus
A purple sphynx cat god who destroys universes for fun but spares them for pudding.
Beerus, known as Hakaishin Birusu in Japanese, is the God of Destruction from the Dragon Ball franchise created by Akira Toriyama. He first appeared in the 2013 film Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods as the main antagonist before returning in Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection 'F' and the anime series Dragon Ball Super. Resembling a purple sphynx cat dressed in traditional Egyptian clothing, Beerus maintains universal balance by destroying worlds at a whim. While Supreme Kais focus on creation, his sole desires are enjoying gourmet food and finding worthy opponents. His pursuit of the legendary Super Saiyan God led him to Earth, where he faced Goku in a battle that threatened to destroy Universe 7.

Lore & Background
Beerus's existence is intrinsically linked to the East Supreme Kai; if one dies, the other perishes as well. This connection became a critical weakness when the alternate timeline version of the East Supreme Kai was killed by Dabura, causing that timeline's Beerus to die in his sleep despite being vastly stronger. His power is immense, with Whis stating he can destroy entire universes. During his first clash with Super Saiyan God Goku, their colliding fists created ripples through Universe 7 capable of obliterating existence if the fight continued. Beerus possesses the ability to neutralize mortal energy and utilizes Hakai, a technique that instantly destroys both bodies and souls of mortals and low-tier Gods. He also wields an imperfect version of Ultra Instinct, allowing him to dodge attacks from other Gods of Destruction effortlessly.
In Their Own Story
After waking from a 39-year sleep due to a prophecy about the Super Saiyan God, Beerus traveled to Earth seeking this warrior. He easily defeated Goku in his Super Saiyan 3 form before attending Bulma's birthday party. The celebration nearly ended when Majin Buu refused to share pudding, causing Beerus to effortlessly defeat Buu, Gotenks, Gohan, Android 18, Piccolo, and Tenshinhan. After Vegeta provoked him with a backhand over Bulma, Goku intervened to spare the Earth by initiating a ritual. Five pure-hearted Saiyans (including an unborn Trunks) channeled energy into Goku, transforming him into a Super Saiyan God. Although Goku eventually lost as his power faded, Beerus spared them, noting Goku was the second strongest opponent he ever faced after Whis. In later events, Beerus revealed past actions such as sealing Old Supreme Kai in the Z Sword and instigating Frieza to destroy Planet Vegeta.
Reader's Guide
Beerus's combat style relies on overwhelming power rather than complex strategy, though he has shown tactical awareness by holding back significant strength against Goku. His signature move, Sphere of Destruction, involves creating a small sun-like energy ball between his hands before enlarging and launching it. He also uses 'Destruction before Creation,' surrounding himself in a solar aura before releasing an energy wave. In Dragon Ball Super: Broly, he acted as a caretaker on Bulma's vacation, and in Super Hero, he allowed Broly, Cheelai, and Lemo to stay on his planet after tasting Lemo's cooking. His relationship with his attendant Whis is complex; while Whis serves him, he often acts as a caretaker, and Beerus fears the Omni-King despite being a top-tier deity.
Did You Know?
- Beerus's name comes from the word 'virus,' though creator Akira Toriyama mistakenly believed it meant 'beer', sparking a naming theme for alcohol-based deities.
- His design was based on a real Cornish Rex cat owned by Toriyama that recovered from an illness, prompting a vet to jokingly call it demonic.
- Originally, Beerus was planned to fight with a spoon or fork before animation director Tadayoshi Yamamuro suggested chopsticks instead for practicality.
- Beerus considers Whis his strongest opponent ever, while he ranks Goku as the second strongest fighter he has faced.
