Tegan entered the Doctor's life when her aunt Vanessa's vehicle suffered a flat tyre en route to Heathrow Airport. Mistaking the TARDIS for a police box, she boarded just as the Fourth Doctor fell from the Pharos Project radio telescope and regenerated into his fifth incarnation. Initially wanting only to reach Heathrow to start her job with Air Australia, she stayed after her aunt was killed by the Master. Her time in the TARDIS coincided with Adric, Nyssa, Turlough, and Kamelion. She often bickered with them, particularly Adric, though her strength kept the crew together. She spoke at least one Indigenous Australian language fluently and could use firearms. Despite her tough exterior, she suffered deep psychological trauma from events like Adric's death in Earthshock and possession by the alien intelligence known as the Mara. Her English maternal grandfather was a local historian named Andrew Verney, and she had a cousin, Colin Frazer, who was terrorised by Omega.

Tegan's journey took her through terrifying adventures that eventually took a severe psychological toll. She briefly departed in Time-Flight (1982) after being left behind at Heathrow due to a misunderstanding but returned for Arc of Infinity (1983), which was set about a year later in Earth time. During that gap, she worked as a stewardess before being fired and was once again possessed by the Mara. Her final regular appearance came in Resurrection of the Daleks (1984). After witnessing the carnage of the Doctor's battle with the Daleks, Tegan became increasingly disillusioned. In 1984 London, she bid an emotional good-bye to both the Doctor and Turlough, choosing to live a normal life rather than continue in the face of such horror. Later, an illusory image of her appeared during the Fifth Doctor's regeneration into the Sixth in The Caves of Androzani.
