Tegan Jovanka is an Australian flight attendant who became one of the Doctor's most assertive companions, played by Janet Fielding. She debuted in the serial Logopolis (1981) and served alongside the Fourth and Fifth Doctors, traveling with Adric, Nyssa, and Vislor Turlough. Unlike previous companions, she frequently challenged the Doctor's decisions with a skeptical, no-nonsense manner, famously describing herself as "just a mouth on legs." Her journey was defined by raw human emotion, often clashing with the crew while fiercely protecting them. Fielding reprised her role in The Caves of Androzani (1984) and "The Power of the Doctor" (2022), cementing Tegan's legacy as a character whose departure was motivated by the emotional toll of the Doctor's dangerous lifestyle.

Tegan entered the Doctor's life when her aunt Vanessa's vehicle suffered a flat tyre en route to Heathrow Airport. Mistaking the TARDIS for a police box, she boarded just as the Fourth Doctor fell from the Pharos Project radio telescope and regenerated into his fifth incarnation. Initially wanting only to reach Heathrow to start her job with Air Australia, she stayed after her aunt was killed by the Master. Her time in the TARDIS coincided with Adric, Nyssa, Turlough, and Kamelion.

She often bickered with them, particularly Adric, though her strength kept the crew together. She spoke at least one Indigenous Australian language fluently and could use firearms. Despite her tough exterior, she suffered deep psychological trauma from events like Adric's death in Earthshock and possession by the alien intelligence known as the Mara. Her English maternal grandfather was a local historian named Andrew Verney, and she had a cousin, Colin Frazer, who was terrorised by Omega.
