Ianto Jones is a fictional character in the BBC television programme Torchwood, played by Welsh actor Gareth David-Lloyd. A regular within the show, he appears in every episode of the first three series excluding the finale of series 3, as well as two crossover episodes of Doctor Who. Initially serving as the general support officer for Torchwood Three, a team of alien hunters stationed in Cardiff, Ianto begins with limited screen time but develops into an active field agent. His reserved and efficient nature often provided writers with opportunities to add humorous asides to scripts. The character's role expanded significantly in response to growing cult appeal, evolving from a background administrator to the main romantic interest of Captain Jack Harkness.

In the episode "Cyberwoman," it is revealed that he was keeping his girlfriend, Lisa, alive after she was partially converted into a Cyberman, concealing her in the Hub basement. When she eventually broke loose and killed two civilians, Ianto was forced to confront Captain Jack Harkness. Although Jack revived him with a kiss after Lisa knocked him unconscious, the rest of the team had to kill Lisa.

Mid-series, despite his lingering concern for Lisa, Ianto began developing a sexual relationship with Jack. By the penultimate episode, he was willing to shoot colleague Owen Harper to protect Jack, refuting claims that he was merely a "part time shag."
