Nyssa was an aristocrat from Traken, the daughter of Tremas (a consul) and stepdaughter of Kassia. Her life changed when the Master manipulated events to seize the Keepership, murdering her stepmother and hypnotizing Nyssa before taking control of her father's body. After escaping the Master's control with the help of the Watcher, she discovered Traken had been destroyed by the Master's tampering with Logopolitan formulae. She joined Adric and Tegan Jovanka as a companion, witnessing the Fourth Doctor regenerate into the Fifth. During their travels, Nyssa was trapped in a mathematical equation by the Master, encountered androids and a Terileptil (incidentally starting the Great Fire of London), and discovered her resemblance to 1920s socialite Ann Talbot. Following Adric's death battling Cybermen, she displayed a previously unseen psychic ability when contacted by the Xeraphin. Her journey with the Doctor ended at the space station Terminus; separated from Tegan and the Doctor, she chose to stay behind to free enslaved guards and convert the station into a hospital, a noble gesture that moved the Doctor to call her very brave before they parted.

In Their Own Story

The events of Time Flight left Nyssa traveling alone with the Doctor for an unspecified period until they were reunited with Tegan while fighting Omega in Amsterdam and on Gallifrey. Later, the crew battled the Mara's influence over Tegan. In Mawdryn Undead, they met Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart and adopted Turlough, an alien posing as a student who had made a bargain with the Black Guardian to assassinate the Doctor. Turlough's interference destabilized the TARDIS, locking it onto the derelict station Terminus. There, Nyssa was separated from her friends. In a heartbreaking departure, she elected to remain on Terminus to help free the enslaved guards and turn the facility into a real hospital, kissing the Fifth Doctor goodbye. Years later, in the 2020 short story Farewell, Sarah Jane, written by Russell T. Davies, it was revealed that Nyssa had entered into a relationship with fellow traveler Tegan Jovanka.
