Adric hailed from Alzarius, a planet within E-Space where he belonged to a highly adaptable species capable of evolving to suit environments, though his specific substrain's full potential remained unknown. He possessed an inhumanly rapid healing rate but could not regenerate amputated parts. His personality was defined by a sharp intellect coupled with insecurity; the star-shaped badge he wore symbolized his excellence in mathematics, yet his inability to connect emotionally often led to friction with the Doctor and other companions like Romana and K9.

While the Fourth Doctor respected Adric's mind, their relationship was strained by the boy's insubordination. This dynamic continued into the Fifth Doctor's era with new companions Nyssa and Tegan, where Adric remained a figure of tragic potential. His death in Earthshock left a deep mark on his friends; in Time-Flight, Tegan begged the Doctor to save him, but he refused to break the Laws of Time. Later, in The Power of the Doctor, a hologram of the Fifth Doctor confirmed that Adric was still remembered by the Thirteenth Doctor.

Reader's Guide

Adric's television tenure spanned 11 stories across 40 episodes during Seasons 18 and 19, with an illusion appearance in Season 21's The Caves of Androzani. His character was conceived by producer John Nathan-Turner as a "cosmic Artful Dodger" intended to be a roguish roughneck, though actor Matthew Waterhouse noted the role lacked consistent development. Beyond television, Adric appeared in the Virgin Missing Adventures novel Cold Fusion meeting the Seventh Doctor, and in Divided Loyalties.

In Big Finish audio drama The Boy That Time Forgot, an older Adric was saved by a pocket dimension created by Block Transfer Computations; driven insane by isolation, he attempted to force Nyssa into marriage before forgiving the Doctor and dying again. In IDW's Doctor Who: The Forgotten, a manifestation of Adric saved the Tenth Doctor's life, stating it was "not a pointless death." He also appears as "Adric, Mathematical Genius" in Magic: the Gathering.
