Lore & Background

In the Mage Knight Board Game, a player controls one of four Mage Knights—Arythea, Goldyx, Norowas, or Tovak Wyrmstalker—exploring the Mage Knight universe and fighting powerful enemies. Players choose from a number of scenarios, each with a particular objective such as conquering cities, controlling land areas, or investigating mysteries. The game board is created using tiles as described in the scenario documentation. Each character has a 16-card deck used for actions and movement, starting with a hand size of 5 cards that increases as characters level up by defeating monsters. The map is slowly revealed as players explore, and enemies are placed on the map as the board is revealed. Game time is tracked using rounds with a Day/Night mechanic; when all players have passed or cannot draw, the round ends and advances to the next Day/Night cycle. The game continues until a predetermined number of game days have elapsed, at which point players win if the scenario objective is met or lose if it is not.

Reader's Guide

Mage Knight Board Game is significant for its deep solo gameplay and its adaptation of a collectable miniatures universe into a board game format. Its expansions—The Lost Legion (December 2012), Krang Character (2013), Shades of Tezla (July 2015), and The Apocalypse Dragon (March 2026)—added new characters and content, with the Ultimate Edition (December 2018) bundling the base game and all three earlier expansions. The game's mechanics, including deck-building, tile exploration, and a Day/Night round system, influenced later titles such as Star Trek: Frontiers (July 2016). Critical reception was positive, with outlets like TechRaptor rating it 10.0 and describing it as 'one of the best, if not the best, solo game on the market.' The game sold out within its first month of release, prompting a second printing. It received multiple award nominations, including the 2011 Dice Tower Best Game of the Year, 2012 International Gamers Awards nomination in General Strategy, and the 2012 Golden Geek Award for Most Thematic Board Game. In 2019, it was inducted into the Origins Award Hall of Fame.
