Escape the Dark Castle

Cooperative dungeon-crawl with dice, items, and group choices.

Escape the Dark Castle

Escape the Dark Castle is a cooperative board game from 2017, designed by Alex Crispin, Thomas Pike, and James Shelton, and released by Themeborne Ltd. In the game, players take on the roles of adventurers who have been wrongfully imprisoned. They must work together to make their way through a castle made up of randomly generated chapter encounters, using dice, items, and group decisions to overcome traps, horrors, and combat. The goal is for the entire group to escape without losing a single member.

The game was first funded through a Kickstarter campaign in June 2017. Three expansion packs followed in 2018, adding new mechanics, characters, cards, and dice. A second game in the series, the sci-fi themed *Escape the Dark Sector*, reused many of the same mechanics and was funded and released in 2020. The system was also adapted for *The Last of Us: Escape the Dark*, which came out in 2023. In October 2025, Themeborne launched a Gamefound campaign for a second edition of *Escape the Dark Castle*, aiming to improve the art, balance, and difficulty, and to add more cards and mechanics. The campaign was successful, and the second edition is scheduled for release in late 2026.

During gameplay, each player chooses one of six characters, each with different strengths in three traits—Might, Cunning, and Wisdom—and a unique character die. The game includes a deck of 45 chapter cards that describe scenarios and obstacles. To start, 15 random chapter cards are drawn to form the castle deck, with a boss card placed at the end. Players must survive all 15 rooms and defeat the boss without any player losing all their hit points to win. Each round, the group picks one player to enter the next room first. That player draws the next chapter card, reads the scenario aloud, and may face positive or negative consequences. In each room, the group must collectively make a choice, roll dice, draw or use items from the item deck, or fight an enemy. During combat, a number of chapter dice equal to the number of players are rolled. One player may sit out to recover hit points while the others fight. To attack, all fighting players roll their character dice at the same time. If a symbol rolled matches any symbol on the chapter dice, that chapter die is removed.

Lore & Background

Escape the Dark Castle was published by Themeborne Ltd. following a successful Kickstarter campaign in June 2017. Three expansion packs for the game were released in 2018, adding new mechanics, characters, cards, and dice. A second game in the Escape the Dark series, a sci-fi inspired game titled Escape the Dark Sector which reimplemented many of the game mechanics from Escape the Dark Castle, was similarly funded and released in 2020. The game system was also reimplemented in The Last of Us: Escape the Dark, which released in 2023.

In October 2025, Themeborne opened a Gamefound campaign to fund a second edition of Escape the Dark Castle that would improve the game's art, balance, and difficulty, as well as add more cards and mechanics. The game was successfully funded and is set to release in late 2026.

Reader's Guide

Escape the Dark Castle is significant as the foundational title of the Escape the Dark series, establishing a cooperative game system that was later reimplemented in two other games: Escape the Dark Sector (2020) and The Last of Us: Escape the Dark (2024). Its 2017 Kickstarter campaign and subsequent expansions demonstrated a model for crowdfunded board game publishing. The game's reception highlighted its atmospheric gameplay, simple rules, and high replayability, though critics noted high randomness and limited player control over that randomness. The announcement of a second edition in 2025, alongside a new standalone entry Escape the Dark Forest, indicates ongoing interest in the series. The game's cooperative mechanics, where players collectively choose a leader each round and fight enemies by rolling character dice against chapter dice, have been carried forward into later titles. Its visual style and quick gameplay were particularly praised by reviewers, and the game was described as 'one of the nicest, most cohesive-looking dungeon-crawls out there.' The legacy of Escape the Dark Castle lies in its influence on the series and its role in Themeborne's catalog.
