The video game Dorfromantik was developed in Berlin by Toukana Interactive, a German indie studio founded in 2020 as part of a master's degree program at HTW Berlin. The video game was inspired by board games and designed to look like one; its first prototype was published in April 2020 during a game jam called Ludum Dare, and it entered early access in March 2021 before full release on 28 April 2022. When the video game won the Deutsche Computerspielepreis (German PC Game Award) in 2022, Lukas Zach's studio was also nominated, drawing Zach's attention to the game because it resembled a hex-placing board game he and Palm had been developing for years. They contacted Toukana to begin collaboration on a board game version, agreeing on a licensed cooperation. After much playtesting, the two teams first met in person at Essen SPIEL. Karsten Esser, CEO of Pegasus Spiele, noted that they 'worked the other way around' from normal, as usually a successful video game publisher approaches board game designers rather than the reverse.
