Sanae Furukawa is Nagisa Furukawa's mother and Akio's wife, with whom she runs the bakery Furukawa Bread. She also tutors neighbourhood children at the Furukawa Cram School, held at the bakery.

Background
Sanae is childlike and cries easily, especially when someone insults her bread, yet she is strong-willed and dependable when it counts. She keeps inventing strange breads that turn out inedible and almost never sell. She looks young enough to be taken for Nagisa's older sister and is proud of it; in the Sunohara siblings arc she even poses as Youhei's girlfriend. She was a junior-high teacher before quitting because of Nagisa's health. In ~After Story~ she supports Tomoya through Nagisa's illness and pregnancy, helps raise Ushio for five years after Nagisa's death, and arranges the trip on which Tomoya meets his grandmother Shino. In her own route in the visual novel, the children she tutors save her cram school from closing.
