Background

Oz Clarke, a wine expert and writer active in the industry since 1984, previously served as wine correspondent for the Daily Telegraph and appeared on BBC Two's Food and Drink. After that programme ended, he was paired with Top Gear presenter James May for wine-related BBC shows, with Clarke as the expert and May as the less knowledgeable wingman. In December 2009, Clarke was paired with comedian Hugh Dennis, who describes himself as a half a bottle drinker, for a one-off special called Oz and Hugh Drink to Christmas. The success of that special led to the creation of a full series.
